Introductions / Re: What is it worth???
« on: January 17, 2023, 04:26:17 PM »
Good evening,
Looks like a great start! Much better than I faired with my 49.  We worked on it thru summer last year and their are a lot of posts to look at.
Looked like that is a curved down kicker and should be curved up.  I dont think 49 had that aircleaner.  Check cylinder in front to see if the hole is threaded for a decompressor.  K engine would have Wico magneto.

Mine has a lot of mismatched about it.

Good luck,
Scooter

Good morning,
I am glad I read this posting because I dug the corks out of my 49K thinking someone else did that maybe they lost the metal plugs and so I put metal plugs back in.
Better take them out and get some cork.

Restoration Projects / Re: K model restoration finally done
« on: October 08, 2022, 12:46:30 PM »
Good afternoon,
The K model is finally done. I had to paint it twice because I tried a different brand of less expensive paint and had orange peel when mixed to instructions and fish eye when thinned to melt good.  I use acrylic enamel with activator.  The paint shoots thick when mixed at the instructions.

I learned something with this color.  I cant wipe off the dirt fast enough to take a picture.  I have never had anything all black.  I like how it looks, but would not want an all black car.

I appreciate your help.  I may start looking for an earlier model, but I bet parts are impossible to find.

Thank you,
Scooter

Good afternoon,
That looks like it has been a lot of work. I am glad you posted so many pictures, I have not seen details on the earlier bikes.
It is going to look great!

Engine & Transmission / Re: Wico magneto wont spark at kick starter speed

Good evening,
not a bad meter, but an open in the secondary windings. It is going bad somewhere in there.  Run it till it wont.  The Cushman coil the others recommended I buy was cheap and works great it you need to replace it.  But mark which plug wire you connect it to so you will know when you have to trouble shoot.
Good luck,

Engine & Transmission / Re: rotary valve and engine case repair

Good evening and welcome DynoDan.
Maybe after you get a chance to check the crank bearings for play if you need to just fix a little scoring in the block you can try smearing in some slow set JB weld like I did. I have not run it maybe an hour but seams to have stayed in place.  It did not take long to do.
The good part of the bearing bores on each side of where the rotor valve runs was close enough together to use a new box knife blade as a straight edge to smear in the JB weld and clean off any that is anywhere but in any scoring with the box knife blade for sure in the snap ring grooves.  Dont want to leave any build on the bearing bores or they wont go back in.
Good luck.

Thank you for the reply.
Maybe that is for the three legged chair idea and was done as an attempt to deal with the welding causing the frame mount surface to not be flat.
I may try to shim it, but I bet that would be difficult.  Perhaps the bolt is just supposed to be tightened like the others?  That is what I did when I put together the mechanical restoration to run it.
Seems odd though and I have not found a mention in manuals.
Thank you,

Good afternoon,
does any one know if the motor mount hole location that is recessed supposed to be shimmed?
Please let me know.

Good evening,
I may reconsider the color then.  I will have to think about it because they do also look sharp in black.  I will have plenty of time to decide while I clean parts up.

Good evening,
I plan to paint all black. I love lots of chrome, but not on tanks or fenders.  I am going to take the wheels apart and paint the spokes and pulley clips cadmium color.  Not sure if Simplex did them with the same type of black paint on all parts, but I may do the rocker and other brackets in satin.  Flat for the exhaust and cadmium color for linkage.  Shiny silver for handle bars.  I like to break the finishes up.  If I find out all the original finishes for the K model, then I may stick to that.
Thank you,

Restoration Projects / K model restoration
« on: June 13, 2022, 05:22:48 PM »
Good evening,
Attached are images of the K model I (and also you for helping) have been working on.  This is where I wound up with what I have and figure it is time to move it to the restoration section.
I planning to paint it this year if time permits. I typically fix bikes up nice enough to where I am reluctant to ride them anymore, but I plan to ride this.

I prefer it be more correct, but for now, this is what I have.  The tail light, seat pan, kicker, flywheel cover and rocker pedal are wrong.
I could easily make a correct rocker, but left this one that is Late L ratchet with the K and early L detent cup welded to it as part of the history of this bike because I believe a owner did it years ago to solve a problem.

The flywheel cover came with the pile and appears to went to a model that did not have a hole so no kicker.  Since someone already put a hole in it, I used it and made a pinion cover for it.

The seat pan is 40's Harley and a little big.  I may cut it down, but if I leave it original size and stitch a cover for it, at least I can still put it on a Harley if I get a Simplex seat.

Thank you,
Scooter

Good evening,
I drove the K model today and it runs great! It is always a joy to resurrect something.
I really enjoy riding a Simplex.  I have not driven one since 1995 when I restored an H and an M for a friend.  I did my M at the same time, but have never started it because the throttle tube is missing.  I will make one soon.

I am surprised at how fast it goes in low.  I bet it can go at least 20 mph.  I checked the belts and pulleys and they are as far as they can go to get the lowest speed.  The pulley is all the way to make the motor belt ride as high in the groove as possible and the final belt is riding as low in the pulley as it can.  I does have reasonable power though on flat.

I still have a lot to do before I will take it back apart to paint.  I need to consider finding some correct parts because I have the wrong tail light, kicker, flywheel cover and seat pan.

I have been grateful for your help.
Thank you,
Scooter

Thank you for the pictures.  I will post pictures of what I finish the controls out with this week if I am able to finish.  The shop gets too hot sometimes.

Thank you,
Scooter
