I forgot that your light wires come out of the mag too and trace them to the headlight and tail light and then the other wire if there is one is the kill wire and trace it to where it goes - switch etc.

Didn't know what year your engine was. The older ones have a compression valve on the side of the cylinder to make it easy to push start and to kill the engine. If you have some wires coming out of the mag area other than the big spark plug wires, trace them from the mag and see where they go. If they go to a switch, then that would kill the engine. If the switch that you might find does not kill it, then get a small test wire and clip it on a ground area of the bike and as it is running touch the wire and see if it kills it. If so, the switch you might have found might be no good. Take a look at the three way switch and see if that wire comes to it from the mag. If so that switch might not be good. If only the head and tail light wires go to that 3 way switch, then it is the light switch for high and low.

The toggle switch could be for lights only and the middle is off and  lights and high and low on the other two positions. I killed my old Servi with throttle back to idle and kill with the compression handle bar side.

If you have some holes from the rust at the bottom, you can get a small gas tank seal repair kit at the NAPA store. It is similar to fiberglass with the epoxy. Look on line and you will many
inside gas tank sealers for sale. I seal every gas tank on my old cars and Servi before I use them.

Texas is good to live in because we have hotter than hell in July and August, nice fall days in Sept. Oct and 1/2 half of Nov. Then some cool days in 1/2 of Nov. Then hit and miss freeze and warm days in Dec., Jan. and Feb. Very nice days in parts of Feb March. Very Nice days in rain and wind of April and May. June is the start of the Hot days.
You can ride a cycle parts of 12 months a year.
Lived here 84 years and would never move anywhere else.

Restoration Projects / Original vs Rod
« on: November 23, 2013, 11:03:18 AM »
From the old school, nothing like looking at an original restoration job. Takes your mind back to the days when the Car, Truck, or Cycle was out there to drive or ride as original look and operation. Today, as parts are getting harder to find and other things get the restoration going toward as called in cars, street rod status.
Every one has their own mind set on what they want in owning a classic. In the car and truck industry, two big sets of organizations going. The pure restoration and the more usable restoration of using modern parts to put the vehicle on the road more like todays cars and trucks.
For me, I prefer to have something that I value as original status even if I do not put it on the road daily to drive or ride.
It is just what you want in your cycle or car, leave it as original as possible and thus have
not destroyed the original body or frame or cut and add to satisfy your ownership of the cycle or car.
Its your own cycle, car or truck so have it as you want it and remember, you bought it, not anyone who complains about the restoration.

Engine & Transmission / Re: Crank bearing inside the Mag plate M engine
« on: August 15, 2013, 05:58:13 PM »
I have ordered a couple of the 5203 bearings. Should have them by Monday.
If the bearing is 17MM will have a gap of 8MM after it is set into the mag plate.
from the end of the cam to the edge of the pulley is 25MM on this engine.

Mike the number on my engine is M23065B.
Thanks PD, Mike, Rick for all the info. Hope to get this
engine running soon.
Is there any other number for the mag bearing other than the
5203 zz number.

Since there was no bearing in the engine on the mag plate, I will not know if a spacer
is used between the bearing and the belt pulley.
Any input on this.
Thanks

Phelon on the M and Wico on the H.
The H has a set screw to keep the bearing from turning or moving in or out.
This is the first M that I have worked on and it seems a lot diff.
Anything go between the bearing and the belt pulley?
Thanks

Thank you for all the information on the bearing. I bought the engine and the guy that advertised it said it was a great
running engine. He had if overhauled by a specialist on small engines.
Yes he did?
There is no bearing at all on the mag plate. just blank space between the cam and the belt pulley.
I thought is should have a bearing there but the space is thicker on the mag plate than my H engine plate.
Is there a set screw on the M to hold the wide bearing in place as it is on my H?
Ricks, thank you for the number to use on the bearing.

Engine & Transmission / Crank bearing inside the Mag plate M engine

Do you have the thickness size of the bearing that sets in the Mag plate on the M engine. Bearing is on the crank and just back of the point breaker cam. This bearing is thicker than the bearing for the H engine. Or better than that, the bearing number.
Thanks for your time.

The tank looks nice. Had to same problem one time with a cap that stuck on.
End up sawing it off .
My 40s tank has a brace welded on the end of the tank and also a stud welded
on the front of the tank to bolt it on.
How does the 48 tank bolt on.

Engine & Transmission / Re: Engine change M to H

The Frame is a 40's model. Is there a serial number on the frame to get the year status. It has everything 40's except the engine that came with it and not installed. Has a regular 40's clutch and foot pedal for clutch.
I also have a automatic clutch that came with the engine that needs bearings and putting back together. I have no diagram for the automatic clutch to see how it goes back and how it would hook up if I used it instead of the standard 40's clutch.
The carb on the M engine is different from my carb on the 46 I have also.
More than likely if I can just install the engine, I would use the 40's clutch anyway. The engine also does not have a Wico mag.
Thanks
