My coils were more 'covered' , but , a previous owner may have added tape . See attached .

In your pic , it looks like the HL coil power wire is connected to the power wire from the top coil , via the black with blue end covers . I can't see all the wire runs , so I hope I'm wrong .

Your readings seem high to me , but , I only have what my system produced to compare . And , that is likely not optimum .
If your readings are correct  , the headlight coil is producing about 162 watts and about 58 watts to the tail .

That should be way more than you need . Maybe enough to burn 6 volt bulbs .

I wish I could be more help . My bike is currently waiting to have the motor bearings replaced . I hear a whir on deceleration . I think it's either the crank bearing or the big end rod bearing .
Anyway , I won't be running it for a while , so I can't provide present day output readings .

Good evening,
I know this topic is old, but I am wondering if anyone got the 2221 bulb to light with the Phelon magneto?  I bought two new Mazda 2221 to use on my bikes and thought I would see if it will light before I rotate the flange on the bulb.
My mag will not light the bulb but the mag shows about 8 volts charging. The resistance measurements are similar to ones Paul posted in a different thread.  I tested the bulb connected directly to the wire out of the mag and grounded to the cylinder not even a little glow.  It does spark a little when connecting.  I check tail light coils also.

All three coils will light up the low side of a Sylvania 1154 just fine, but not the high side.

Please let me know.
Thank you,
Scooter

Maybe your mag isn't putting out enough amperage .
You can check :

Take that amount and multiply it times the voltage to see how many watts you have to work with .

My '57 has a Phelon mag . I had no juice to the headlight . I rewound the HL coil and now have a decent amount of light .

Engine & Transmission / Re: Fast rotating rings

Yep.  I think that's the way I'm gonna go.

I guess on the bright side I have an old piston to practice on.   :)

And thanks for all the measurements.  They're going to save me a lot of trial and error.

You're very welcome . Just helping the cause .
Let us know how it goes and maybe post a few pics . ;)

I pinned my rings back in 2015 . I haven't had a ring problem since .

" I pinned the piston , using 1/4" long x 3/32" wide compression pins .

I drilled the landings above the wrist pin , but toward the rear , to a depth of about 5/32" . The pins had to be driven in , so it's unlikely that much , if any, outward drift will happen . I squared the outer end of the pins and called them 'good for service' .

Then the ring ends needed relieving to fit the pins . I used a jewelers square file to reach that 'end' .

All things considered , I think the project turned out nicely .

Good evening Pete,
Thank you for the complement. I do not have the Simplexes in a registry.
Thanks,
Scooter

If you post , or send to kartjockey , the motor and frame numbers , they could be added to our registry .

Looking through the dust , you did a very nice job on the bike .
Is that bike in our registry ?

Good evening,
finally after much searching have found enough pictures on here of all the parts to make the parts I needed. Because the slide has a tang on it at an angle I had to make several cardboard tube mock ups to get it right (or close enough).

Now that I have made the parts and assembled one it is embarrassingly simple though complex looking.

I have finally driven this 1956 that I fixed up in 1996 and it runs great.  It is easy to find why people like the automatic since it is easier to drive.  I do still like the challenge of the shifter.

Scooter

Good you can ride that bike after 27 years .
I'm just guessing that you finally 'retired' enough to finish the project ? ;)

You should post some pics or a video .

I was planning on being there until about 10 days ago when we closed on a small house in a small western Arkansas town .
Being as we've been on the road for the last 12 years and sold or gave away everything needed for sticks and bricks living , we are now shopping for everything to make this house home .
Ex : Just bought a new yard tractor to hopefully help keep the 2/3 acre lawn in shape . Delivery was due yesterday , but got delayed , so hopefully very soon .

Anyway , I hope all of you have a great time with excellent weather .  I hope to get to Portland again , someday . ;)
