Rick, You've definitely got a handle on how to raise a Simplex from the dead. This will be a sweet putt around the Portland fairgrounds. Bob

What Year is my Bike? / Re: new member / what year are these bikes?
« on: May 13, 2017, 07:08:42 AM »
Welcome CJ. That's a great find to get 2 bikes at once. Both fairly complete. Wayne is the go to man for parts. He has everything you will need to complete the bikes. I know it's a long way but in July, Portland, Indiana vintage bike meet you can find parts, 25 or more Simplex's complete, a bunch of great people knowledgeable about these bikes, and a lot of fun to be had. Have fun, that's what this is all about. Bob

You can also use a product called Lexol. That's what Cadillac recommends for their leather seats and sells for about $25 a bottle. But you can get the same bottle at a farm store such as Atwoods for about $4.

Henry, that is one beautiful survivor. There was one at Portland last year. But it wasn't that complete. The rear clutch and brake pedal is in between the direct drive and the rocker clutch model. The guy at Portland seemed to think his was a '39 or '40. As you will find out, putting an exact date on these little scoots can be kind of tricky. Simplex engineers came up with an idea, and put it into production as soon as possible. Sometimes not waiting for a model or year change. I'll try to find the pictures I took at Portland and post them for comparison. Congrats on a family heirloom. Bob

After last year I'm thinking this will now be a yearly event. Super cool. Had a great time. I don't see how anyone could not have a good time around friends and vintage bikes. Portland is something everyone should experience.

Hi Lester, Make sure and check the rotary valve clearance. Bob Kerr here in OK says this one of the problems of the simplex engines. They don't make enough suction to suck gas into the cylinder to run correctly. If this has too much clearance or wear it will make them hard to start and won't develop the power it should. What part of MO are you from. I'm about 40 miles northeast of Tulsa, OK. I've got a few pictures of the early direct drive bikes. Counting yours I know of 5. I have a frame, front end, handlebars and gooseneck, tank, headlight, generator, wheels, and seat. Long way to go. Probably never find an engine. But I'll keep looking. Could you post or send me some detailed pictures of your front and rear brake setups so I'll know what to look for. Thanks, Bob

Hi MO, Welcome and what a find. Your's is only the 4th old complete direct I've ever seen. The original headlight was a Miller unit from England that ran off a rear wheel generator. The tailight was battery operated if it had one at all, some didn't. The brakes were Sturmey Archer bicycle drum brakes also from England. Your's looks original. Your lucky to have most of the original parts. Congratulations on the bike it's really special to be in that original condition. Bob

Well guys, went to see Rick, about 3 1/2 hour drive from me. Real nice guy. Has some really cool and rare bicycles. Checked out Ol' Krusty, real complete and great place to start a project. Got ready to head back home and Ol' Krusty jumped in the back of my truck. It wanted to come back to Oklahoma so I let it ride. This was so complete I just had to have it. Any ideas about the seat. It is a larger and deeper saddle with a double bend spring. I saw in the tank and seat guide the double bent spring was '48, but the rest of the bike appears to be much older. Also the handle bars appear to be a little wider and longer than some of the others. Could this have been a special build for a company or military. Bob
