Title: Magneto question??
Post by: Antney on October 18, 2019, 07:38:11 PM
Hello, I got the carb parts I needed but now it appears I have no spark?? Could this be from just sitting so long? Are there replacements available?? Thanks...

Have you had the flywheel off and cleaned all connections , including the points ?

Pete . :)

No, this is my first simplex, how do I get the cover off to access them??

Post a pic of what you have , particularly the flywheel .
You'll likely need a puller .

It has the three screw holes for like a steering wheel puller, does the gear need to come off or will it come off with the puller?

DO NOT pry on the flywheel!  Like PD says, post a picture so we can see which magneto you have,  as there are several types.

Ok, got the flywheel off, cleaned the points and all the contact areas on the flywheel and magnetos...still no spark!!! Everything inside this looks to be in great condition, super clean etc.? Could it be the capacitor maybe?? Having problems with pics, don’t know how to resize them small enough to load?? If anyone wants to see them I can text or email them??

Send me the pictures, I will resize them and post them.

Assuming the flywheel is good, there is only a couple of things it can be.  Coil, points, and condenser.  Also, check the wiring to the switch.  The switch works by grounding out the ignition.  If the wire is worn through, it could be grounding out unintentionally.

Put a screwdriver or something steel to the magnets of the flywheel to make sure that is good.

Are the points open in the pic you posted ?
They should be closed , completely . And , they should be gaped at .020" when the point heal is lined up with the line on the cam ( almost opposite of where it is in that^ pic ) .

The magnets seem fine, the points do completely close and open. There is a three position switch, what position should it be in? Are the points and condenser available new? How do I test the coil?

Seems I’ve lost my audience?????

You haven't lost anyone . Some folks have actual lives to lead .
I've heard that patience is a virtue . ;)

The points open and close completely . That's good , but , are they doing so at the correct time ?
New points are available from Wayne . Any .22µ condenser that will fit will work fine . The condenser can also be mounted outside the magneto to help it stay cooler and work better . I'm sure Wayne has those , too .

Get your ohm meter out for testing coils . My original ignition coil is 14.11 ohms and my aftermarket Cushman coil is 17.66 ohms . Both produce a nice spark . One meter lead to the coil ground and the other lead to the coil output . No HT wire connected .

What do you mean by " No HT wire connected"? Is it possible that the ignition switch on a 48 could be closed at center setting, and when engaged front or rear position, engine running with or without lighting system on?

HT is high tension wire. The wires that go to the spark plugs.

A multi-meter should tell you what each switch position is good for . ;)

Rick, Why not only explain how to test the two coils on an actual Wyko?
How to set up the Ohmmeter value?
Which color tester wires to connect exactly where?
And what reading should we expect for a normal condition Magneto system?
I understand that everybody's must know it; but I don't, Thanks...!!

The following resistances were taken from my Phelon magneto . I would think the Wyco system should be similar .
Magneto Resistance :

OEM ignition coil 14.11 ohm  Phelon # 2454
Cushman ignition coil 17.7 ohm out of the box / 17.66 ohm installed .
Tail running light coil .5 ohm ( blue wire - upper coil )
Tail stop light coil .7 ohm      Bulb 1154
Headlight coil .9 ohm

Every multimeter comes with pretty simple instructions . Harbor Freight has one for 7 bucks that will do nicely for most purposes .
Basically black lead in the common 'hole' goes to ground ...
Set the meter to ? , lowest value .

Each component should be tested disconnected and separated from the stator .

G-T, I’m the wrong guy to ask about electrical. But these systems are pretty simple.  Above, where PD is speaking of resistance, it shows a ?, but that is really an ohm symbol.  I don’t know how to display an ohm symbol on the iPad.

Thanks Guys; those value numbers will help me a lot...!!

Rick ,

I changed that post to read 'ohm' instead of the question mark that was there .

For whatever reason , this sites' software does not translate Windows Alt codes correctly .
