Buy, Sell, Trade / Re: 1953 Simplex Automatic

I don’t.  I just went to the auto paint store and picked one out of the charts.  That was a base coat/ clear coat job, now I just use single stage urethane.

That is some great documentation!  Amazing someone saved it all these years.

Frame, Tank, Seat, Controls, Etc / Re: Wires?

Your condenser is in the wrong place.  There will be one wire from the coil to the condenser. On that same terminal will be the connection to the points and another wire that runs up to the ignition switch.  The other terminal on the ignition switch goes to ground.  I like to run the ground back to the magneto backing plate, as I usually powder coat my frames and do not get good grounds the the frame. Below picture is from the manual.

Good work.  I think you really need to measure the cylinder with a bore gauge to make sure it didn’t warp from the heat.  If it did, a good hone job should bring it back to round.  Not a ball hone, but a straight stone hone, like a Sunnen or Lisle.

What Year is my Bike? / Re: Year of frame help

Maybe more pics of the other side.  Be interesting to see what bolt holes are on the vertical brace.  Would help determine what air breather it may have had.

Also, post higher quality pictures so we can focus in on the details.

Went for over $1,200 with the mag in rough shape

That’s insane. You don’t happen to have a link to the auction, I’d like to see what it included.

They are marked FW-1278. They have 2 sets of magnets in them, one set runs the ignition, the other the lighting coil.

How much was stupid money?

Wow, even more interesting is the first post up top is the exact one I have. Same serial number, same part
I’m guessing the guy that sent in the first picture was Jose from Redondo Beach.

That was his name! He bought out a storage unit that had a bunch of Simplex parts in it.

I have one just like it.

Do you have the matching Flywheel? These were only used on pre 1939 models.
