Anyone know what the belt size should be between the motor and transmission on my 58

Short Belt BX25
Long Belt BX75

Thanks for the info ,between this site and Wayne this project should be smooth going!

Rick,
Would you happen to know the belt size for a 1947 model? I would assume the earlier models are different than the the later automatics.

Sorry, I don't. When you find out, please post it for future reference.

Anybody know what modern part numbers relate to both of the belts used on late model bikes. I stopped by the farm store yesterday (had to buy more nails for the building) & the kid behind the counter just had a puzzled look on his face when I gave him those "BX25 & 75" numbers.

Mike, each manufacturer uses their own part number. A B belt is 5/8 wide, the X stands for cogged, and the inside length number is the last digits. B belt outside length is the number plus 3 inches. A BX75 has an outside length of 78 inches.

Makes sense. I'll check at another farm store that typically has older guys. I had forgotten to take the old belts (which are in good condition, but just really old) with me & the kid was clueless.

I read a post by Larry on another topic stating that the older style bolt on pullys were a smaller diameter , would this effect belt size ? All Wayne sells are the older style as replacements for the clip ons.

Hello ,,, I was refering to my old simplex step through scooter,... The early ones had a bolt on pulley and about 1959 started to weld on a larger pulley directly on the pressed ( or spun ) steel rim , also later models had larger diameter Idler pulleys , There were on the servicycles , at least a couple sizes of intermediate pulleys, member clwebster just purchased a primary belt from wayne, so I think that one would fit yours, ,,,,,,best to measure , I keep pieces of broken belts to wrap around pulleys to measure and get greatest accuracy, Best wishes ,,,,, : Larry. p.s. glad your engine is running , that must have been a real brain squeeze ! ??? You get at least 10 gold stars for trying and an A+ for effort ! ;D

Thanks Larry, my attention has turned to staying at the lake in our rv and trail riding with the kids and all that summer stuff. I'll finish the bike this winter I hope , see you all at some events next summer !

It appears the clip on rear pulley (I've not seen any that were welded on) was introduced in '55 or '56 As far as I can tell from photographs, it's the same diameter as the bolt on pulleys. My clip on pulley measures 21.25 inches in diameter.

Hi there ,,, the pulleys were welded on the late model motorscooters , not the servicycles , the pulleys were bigger and they made for a better drivability,
-
are these belt sizes for the servicycles? or scooters? looking for a belt source and brand name including sizes for
my serial 13797 servicycle. thanks in advance

Those belts I posted above are for any Simplex Automatic. Most auto parts stores should stock these.

Rick ,
Which bikes take a 27 and / or 28 inch belt ?

Pete, that is a good question. I know the automatics take the 5L280. Maybe the manual shift bikes take the 5L270? Tom Klump, help us out on this one!!

At one point I can remember matching up a front belt as I was working at a parts store then(in the machine shop) but my belt were still a pretty nice original so I decided to still use. Can't help you on the length. I did replace the rear. I will have to check to see what size that one was. I remember Gary saying something to me that they were 11/16 wide belts originally.

Tom, run a string around the outside of the belt and measure it for us, please.

That doesn't sound right :
Short Belt BX25
Long Belt BX75

Yes it does. 5L280 is a BX25 belt. 28" outside diameter, 25" inside diameter.
The X in BX means cogged belt.
Here is a little more:
B Section V Belts
Manufacturing Range: 22¨-660¨
¨B¨ section inside length plus 3¨ equals outside length up to 120
B220 and larger inside length plus 1.3¨ equals outside length.
(ie. B240=B241.3)
Top width -21/32¨. Depth- 13/32¨

I just went out and compared old belts to new ( the new BX belts match nicely ) and while doing that recalled that the outside measure was 3" longer than the inside measure and figured that that must be the difference . It didn't occur to me that one was cogged ( BX ) and the other ( 5L ) was not . I do recall reading about the differences , now that you reminded me . ;)
So , I apologize for my absentmindedness . :-[

Pete, I just read some info on belts. B belts and 5L are the same size, but a B belt is made stronger, with a life expectancy 2.5 times that of a 5L belt. For what we are doing, I don't think it matters all that much. The 5L belts are also cogged.
-
"The 5L belts are also cogged."
Hmm , learn something new every day .
I bought the BX series belts for the cogs as well as the longer life expectancy . I've had the 'standard' 5L belts on mowers and was not at all impressed with their lifespan . I much prefer the heavier duty belts that last 3 times as long in the same application . Granted our bikes are not extreme usage situations , but I still prefer the BX over the 5L for the confidence that I'll likely never have to replace them . Not to mention that the BX belts can be had for about the same price as the 5L belts . I paid $26 total for two belts ( BX25 & BX75 ) , at my door .

Here are the measurements from my original belts. Belts have Dayton molded into them and maybe a run or mold number but cannot see a part number. If there ever was one maybe it was printed on. Primary belt looks to be settling down in the crank pulley a bit. Measures .612wide X 26" long around the outside. The width measurement would explain why it sits deeper in the vee pulley This was taken with the rocker clutch tipped back to keep the belt taught so string would wrap around nicely. Secondary belt measures .761 wide X 76.5" long around the outside. Some wear but not bad. Kind of thinking about putting it back on to save originality. Both belts are cog belts.
-
Correction on the rear belt width. Should be .661".
-
Gary had a bunch of 5L270 belts. I bet these are correct for foot shift bikes.

All this belt talk is great.....too bad it's not in the "engine / transmission" section.....
Gosh, I'm turning into a nag aren't I......
