Title: Brake Shoe Protection Clip
Post by: Ricks on March 04, 2013, 07:14:35 AM
Anyone ever seen one of these.  I just took apart the brakes from my 55, and they had these steel clips on them to prevent wear at the pivot point.  I have never seen these before on any I have disassembled.  Guess I will have to break out the manuals and see if I can find any info.

Possibly a transplant from a similar sized motorcycle application ?

Rick, was there any wear on the pads underneath the metal "shoes", to indicate the shoes were added later?  If it looks like they were there since new maybe it was one of Treens "continuous improvement" ideas that only lasted a short while.

The brake shoe company may have shipped in some samples for Treen to experiment with that he wound up using in production.

No wear. They look like they had been there since day one.

Does anyone have the drum diameter of the break hubs in millimeters?¿?

If you have the drum diameter in inches , simply multiply that by 25.4 .

In other words , there are 25.4 millimeters in one inch .

Well I don't have access to my drums and I have ran across some breaks shoes on ebay today. One is 105mm and the other is 125mm they look like its a fairly good match. Ebay numbers 160992594066 for the 125mm and 151014096266 for the 105mm. Just something I found on my surfing time.  8)

The 105mm = 4.133858267716535" and the 125mm = 4.921259842519685" .

The 125mm would be closest to a match . I think ( not positive ) that the drums are 5" .

Here's a set of OEM shoes for comparison . Note the pivot ends .

I'll run up to the barn and get a close measurement . BRB

Reese ,

As close as I could get without dismantling was 4.857" = 123.3678mm .

So maybe the 105mm might work being as there's an about a quarter inch ( 6.35mm ) the brake actuator takes up .
I'd still want to measure things uninhibited before ordering .

Take a look at them and see what you think of them.

Alright, you guys got my lazy ass off the coach!  I just measured a front drum @ 4.998" and rear drum @ 5.003".  So, lets call them 5", which is 127mm.  I put a pair of worn shoes in a backing plate and measured 121mm.  I say the 125mm pair is probably more correct.  I will have to look back, but someone posted a minibike brake a while back that they use.

Here's the 125mm ( http://goo.gl/f1uma )

Here's my OEM

Seems the pivot ends on the 125mm set might have to be opened up a bit .

But they have the built in wear protection clips .

What is the width of those shoes?  BJM on here has found a shoe that he uses, just look for his post about it.
