Title: Simplex Automatic
Post by: David Stinson on July 15, 2014, 05:25:06 AM
Hello,

I had a Simplex Automatic frame that I bought from a junk yard for $8.00 when I was about 17 years old.  I put a Tecumseh engine on it and had way too much fun riding it on the country roads in my neighborhood.  It was push to start direct drive and drag your feet to stop.  After a while I dismantled it and probably sold it back for scrap to the same junk yard.  I have many fond memories of this time in my life and have thought about getting another one on several occasions.  I am currently looking at a bike and will potentially have it within a week.

I'm sure that I will have questions for some of you guys with more knowledge of these fine examples of American history.

Thanks,
David

Welcome David!  When you get it be sure to post up some pictures.  I remember doing the foot drag brakes as a kid on minibikes.   I was wearing out my sneakers really quickly!  LOL

I just bought a 1958 Simplex.  It has not been cranked in about 3 years.  I haven't had time to work on it yet but already know that the throttle cable is damaged so I will be looking for a replacement.

Does anyone know if there is a manual available for these machines

Thanks

Look in the manuals section, what you need is there.  The 1960 manual is the latest model m manual and will have what you need.

I worked on it today and got it running after removing the flywheel and cleaning and gapping the points.  Luckily the carburetor seems to be OK.  I still have to get a throttle working and there seems to be a problem with my key switch and lights.

Dave, if you haven't already, send me the frame number & motor number for your bike & I'll add you to the registry.
