Anxious to see you again Mike! You will have to introduce me to Herb.  Not sure if I met him or not.  Should have a tent up on the hill and hopefully a Simplex banner across the front of it too!

Rick I am trying to redo all the wrong things the moron screwed up. I am working on putting hydraulic braks on my 56 with the Honda engine on it. It will sure beat trying to push the brakes with that long flimsy rod. Wish me luck.

Pete, I see no real need for a front brake.  The rear is really enough for the way these bikes get ridden. That said,  if you want to use a factory style front brake, I could probably provide a front backing plate.
Title: Re: Portland 2018 Roll Call
Post by: pd on June 24, 2018, 06:55:24 AM
You might be right , Rick .

I look at the original rear tire on my bike and see it's fairly bald . I have to think that maybe a front brake would aid in the rear tire wearing a bit longer .
The bald rear may have been from a PO repeatedly going too fast and braking hard , skidding , trying to stop in time . Kids ...

Anyway , I know that on more 'modern' bikes the front brake actually does a must higher percentage of the effective braking than the rear .

And , Thanks for the plate offer . If I go that route , I remember to ask . :)

Pete . :)

Not really...and my garage was broken into and a Whizzer stolen in January...I've since blocked the overhead door with a wall...moving it to the yard side of the building , so even the garage isn't done...I did acquire an Albion trans for the trike though..quite the unit.

Well gents! It's the week before the week!! I took today off to get a few things ready for Portland. Throttle on the S2 took a little ding and had to remove it and straighten it up.  After that I went ahead and loaded the bikes up.  Also went down to the graphics shop here to check on club stickers for the trailer( had a left and right made plus had  the whizzer and Cushman removed out of the center and put a Simplex in their place-will see if anyone notices!) and the Simplex banner for at the camp site. Not sure how it will turn out but I will know more tomorrow! Picked up some 'Secret sauce'  to make everything smell good. Plus it's leaded and the S2 likes that.  It's all for the fun of it!  Buckle up boys...it won't be long now!!

Well I've got good news and some not so good news. I'm currently north of Kansas City Missouri and the weather is better than the 113 degs I drove through. I brought the bike that was in several pieces. I planned to put it together today and test the hydraulic brakes but I'm not at my shop so I can't fix the unseen roadblocks today. I guess I'm walking again this year.  :'( :'( :'(

I never got my membership card even though “they” say that it was sent. 10 years or so ago, the last time i belonged, they would have a list at the gate of members. Do they still do that?

Hey Reese ,

Maybe you can put it together once there ? Can't think of a better congregation of knowledge on the subject .
Good luck , I hope you get it sussed .

Razerface ,

Not sure if they keep a list at the gate or not .
Last time I was there , I just paid the membership fee at the gate and had no problems .

I don't think the weather has been all that bad in the 7 years I have gone with the exception of the one rainy year.  I sort of expect it to be high 80's, low 90's in Indiana in July!

Razerface, I seem to remember them having a roster at the gate they can cross reference you on.

It was good to see the guys again this year.  I think I speak for all us that were there that the weather was the best it has ever been.  It was 60's early in the morning to a high of about 80 in the late afternoon!  We had 1 rain that lasted about 5 minutes and was just enough to knock down some of the dust.

I sold my latest restored 1955, but also bought many parts.  I will have the quarter ton truck finished for next year.  I will be on the lookout for a 1953-1954 frame and forks, as I have just about everything to build another!

Here is a picture of the goodies I bought this year.

Pete, remember, those are the official dates.  Plan on getting there a day or two earlier, as that is when the deals are bought.  Every year around friday night to Saturday morning the place thins out significantly, and by Sunday it is a ghost town.  That's the problem with putting a bike in the show, you need to stay until late sunday until it's over, with not many people around.

After such a wonderful time at VMBC meet (largely thanks to Rick and Wayne), I returned home and learned that Charlie Eakin died a few days ago.  Such a wonderful and friendly guy!!  Here is his obit: Mike

Charles A. "Charlie" Eakin

1922-2018

Diamondhead

Charles A. Eakin (Charlie), age 95 of Diamondhead, died peacefully on July 22, 2018.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Chester and Ethel Eakin of New Orleans; his loving wife, Jean Eakin; his devoted daughter, Suzanne Eakin Vilemont Bruce; and his brother and best friend, Morrie Eakin.

He is survived by his son, Charles W. Eakin II (Jenneane) of Biloxi; grandson, Charles W. Eakin III (Kristie) of Dallas, Texas; granddaughters, Andrea Vilemont Moreau (David) of Pass Christian, and Ashley Vilemont McFadden of Slidell; and great-grandchildren, Eli Kolidas, Andrew Moreau, and Evelyn McFadden, all of Pass Christian. He is also survived by his dear caregivers, Rose Foss and Willie Ellis.

Charlie was born in New Orleans on November 22, 1922, graduated Alcee Fortier High School in 1939, and Louisiana State University with a BS in Industrial Education in 1943. His military career in the US Navy began in September, 1943, attending the 4th midshipman class at Notre Dame and commissioned as an ensign in January, 1944. He spent his entire active duty as an engineering officer and later as a commanding officer of an amphibious assault ship, LSM 231, in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater until his release from active duty in September, 1945. He remained active in the Naval Reserve, retiring in 1982 with the rank of commander.

Following the War, in his civilian career, he joined the New Orleans District Corps of Engineers as a mechanical engineer in 1948 through 1962. In 1962, he became employed by NASA at the Michoud Assembly Facility in New Orleans as a construction management engineer with the Space Shuttle Task Group. Throughout his civilian and military career, Charlie received many awards, certificates of commendation and appreciation, tributes, and honors, including the Key to the City from Mayor Ernst Dutch Morial.

In retirement, Charlie and his wife moved to a beautiful home he designed and built in Diamondhead, Mississippi, a favorite getaway from the city where they'd had a condo since 1970. Among Charlie's many hobbies were vintage gun collecting, coin collecting, and restoring vintage motorcycles and cars along with his brother, Morrie. Charlie also enjoyed flying with his brother and traveling the world with his wife. He also loved John Wayne movies. Charlie had the respect and friendship of everyone who knew him. He was good-natured, kind-hearted, generous, an animal lover, and had a great sense of humor. He will be missed.

Visitation will be at the RIEMANN FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 11280 Three Rivers Road, Gulfport, Mississippi from 10:30 AM until 12:30 PM, on Thursday, August 2, 2018, with interment to follow immediately at the Biloxi National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, please donate to the SPCA of Diamondhead, PO Box 6481, Diamondhead, MS.

An online obituary may be viewed and condolences and photos shared at www.riemannfamily.com
