Other Things Simplex / Re: Insurance
« on: January 28, 2014, 04:46:04 PM »
I also have Hagerty.  I have mine insured for $5000, and it cost me $110.  Does anyone else have theirs tagged for the road? I am going to put my other bikes on the road this summer.

They are 3/8 fine thread studs.

As for the flywheel, what size holes did they drill?  If they are not too big, you can install steel inserts and bring them back to the stock 1/4-20 size.

I don't Facebook, but the Grumpy Peddlers are a group of guys out of  West Virginia.  They go to the Portland meet each year.  The guy with the orange simplex truck built his last winter after looking at mine the year before.

I ordered the nova 2 off of ebay last night, you can buy 2 of them for $23, or buy 1 for $13, I just got the one, I'm gonna play with it when I get my parts from Wayne and see if I can makes sparks fly, if it don't work, I still will have the points and condenser from wayne. I would still like to find out how to make it work w/o any ignition from the magneto...I think that is what Bruce is talking about???

You still need the coils and flywheels. This is just a trigger, as far as I can see.

Wayne can supply those, see the parts supplier thread for contact info.

1954.  The tank decal was "Simplex Automatic".

Early bikes used a compression release to kill the motor. I don't remember the exact year off the top of my head, but somewhere around 1948 they went to a kill switch.

Apparently us guys on the coast take longer to get the magazine, but I will be sure to look for you.

Welcome!  Like PD says, resize your pictures smaller.  I like to use the website feature to post a picture, unlike PD, who likes to embed the picture.  The reason I am not a fan of the embedded picture, is people using a slower connection must wait for all the pictures to load.  With the website feature, you only load a thumbnail, and you can choose which pictures you want to expand.

Rick, when you run out of these let me know and I will resume where your sales leave off!

Will do Tom.  I just counted yesterday, and I am down to my last dozen.

I dont have one right here to measure but the drums etc are used on plenty of bikes (motored). i think the simplex is what?  4 3/4?   im sure my whizzer is that and they fit those.  Simplex drums are bigger, I know.

I'm thinking the axles might be too short for a simplex frame.  Someone that has a worksman wheel needs to measure the axle length.

Restoration Projects / Re: 55 restoration
« on: December 04, 2013, 06:11:13 PM »
I ran a sanding scroll on the inside of the crank.  I probably only opened it a few thousands of an inch. The port on the crank I just cleaned up the casting.  I felt this hole was already big enough.

I have spoken to Wayne about what I did, and he told me the next time he has cranks made, he is going to have a couple done with a larger diameter so he can put a larger hole down the middle.   I also told him to stroke the crank .010 or so for a little more displacement.

If we could make another horsepower or two out of these motors, these bikes would be more rideable on a 45 mph street!

I sent Mike Sal some aluminum extrusion that I found on eBay. He is milling a small slot in it to replicate the original.  I will post a picture when I get it back.
