Simplex (?) trailer on ebay
« on: December 23, 2013, 04:25:30 PM »
My personal opinion is that this is not a simplex built trailer (can someone with an early bike tell us if the metal bracket on the fender is familiar (that goes under the lens)).  There were several manufacturers of these types of trailers in the 30's & 40's.

What do you guys think?

Here's a link :

The hitch doesn't seem like a good fit anywhere on a Simplex .

I talked to the seller... He's a nice guy....said he bought it because fenders were always so costly and decided someone may wanna use it instead.  Should fit right on a rear rack with that sandwich style hitch mount shouldn't it??
Its an alum box and sets on springs....the wheel hubs are captured sorta like a simplex and not a bolt on hub thingy.... So I really don't know........anyone seen one to dispute it? I've only seen homemade ones.

I spoke with the owner, Glenn, in Portland, and he is a very nice guy.  He bought a bunch of stuff at the Wollard auction that he was selling.

Here are 2 pictures from Simplex manuals of trailers.  One is just a frame that you build your own box for, the other is a factory built trailer to carry clothes.

In the 1948 manual, they also show a trailer with a prebuilt box, but I could not get a decent copy of that.

What I do notice about all the ones in Simplex literature is that they are round tube frame and built a lot like the 3 wheel trucks.  The one on ebay is mostly flat plate, and the wheels mount very high, unlike the simplex ones.

If I had to guess, I would say built for something else and adapted to a simplex, but that is just pure speculation on my part.

James, my buddy that had the bender no longer has it.  I may be getting a bender of my own one of these days.

JD squared knockoff. I don't recall the radius, but around 5" sounds about right.

Guy in Indiana bought it. Wish I hadn't sold it. It was the best example I have seen with all Simplex parts and it did have a reinforced tongue with ball rack hitch. Not like gary's home made one hitched to bike at auction. Probably never see another.
