If it's only been cropped 2.5" ,I'd get a piece of sheet steel and shape a repair part to weld on. Or give it a heck of try to salvage it.

Hello Butch and Welcome to the forum family .  I suppose either engine will work . I have a preferance to Briggs myself . If going that route I would look for an engine with at least a ball bearing on the PTO side of the crankshaft but thats just my opinion. Lots of folks are using the Honda or Honda clone chinese engine . You can find more info on this subject here on the forum .

I was watching American Restoration this week and Rick and company restored a Sportsman minibike . It was used and painted as a Shriner parade bike . They rebuilt the Continental engine ? . It was a kick start 4 stroke with a laid back cylinder similar to the Honda engine .  This Shriner spent a wicked amount but has a really nice bike .
