I want this. I mean this must be a one of a kind. That shroud look to be completely deigned for a Simplex. What's everyone think?

I'd lay bank that motor was on a Simplex lawnmower they built for a short period of time. I have seen a picture of one, but I can't remember where.
Awesome find! Tom, when you buy it, bring it to Portland! Lol

Oddity for sure , Tom .
I'll agree with Rick . But , it seems the tank is mounted different than in the mower ad .
Pete . :)

The tank is in straps, rotate it 90 degrees.

Yeah , I thought of that , too , Rick . But , according to the pics , the fuel line has to be different . It doesn't look like it would reach in any other configuration .

I wonder if maybe that motor was used on a go kart .

L motor, way too early for Go Karts.
I see what you are saying about the fuel filter, good observation! It wouldn't surprise me if Simplex tried some other equipment, such as a reel mower. I have heard they sold some motors for stationary industrial uses also, but have never seen one.

I just sent the seller a question about any history on the motor he might be able to provide .
I'll post whatever response I get .
Pete . :)

Here's a very prompt response I just rec'd and sent a Thank You for :

Be a really cool project if it went back into an original go-kart.

The Karts didn't used Simplex engines. I believe mostly they used West Bend engines.
-
I didn't know that. Strange? Have a guess as to why they wouldn't have used one of their own engines? Was it a lack of "power" problem or what's your guess or info?
-
After 1960, Simplex stopped using their own engines on everything. I would guess it was not cost effective to keep building engines, as they were out of date and under powered. All the Simplex minibike style bikes they built used outsourced engines as well. The minibik s frequently used Continental engines of different horsepower ratings.

Noone is bidding! I may have to get this engine to Michigan. Maybe if no one bids I will make an offer.
-
Tom ,
Can we expect a new custom build ? ;)
Just guessing , but maybe you think 600 bucks is too high , too .
Pete . :)
-
Yikes!! It sold for $599. But wasn't me. But was ready to make him offer.
-
I was hoping you would get it, but it was not to be. Maybe whoever bough it will step forward with more info on it, if they have any.

Hey guys, I bought this engine last nite. Supposed to be here by Friday. But we'll be gone to Dauphin Island for a week. I hope it arrives before we go or it's going to be a long weeks wait to check it out. I thought it was cool. I may be wrong but I figure any complete original engine is worth 500 to 600 bucks all day long. I've got a couple of frames that were push start never had a kick start. I thought this might be a cool setup for one of these. Original engines are hard to come by. The price of an original bike is reflected in the price they bring with original power vs optional power. Customs are really user friendly though. I'll bring it to Portland where we can check it out. Just a month now, can't wait. Bob

Excellent Bob. Be sure to take a lot of pictures as you rebuild it. I wonder what it is going to look like under the cooling shroud. I am curious if there is a fan in it.
See you in Portland!
