Frame, Tank, Seat, Controls, Etc / Tank Sealing
« on: November 09, 2023, 10:33:09 AM »
Has anyone used a tank sealant to treat the inside of a Simplex gas tank?
If so, how did you deal with the center partition?
Thanks.

I have an order in with Wayne about 3 weeks now.  Haven't heard a word from him.

I know he's a one-man show, so I'm a bit reluctant to bug him.

See the original entry in this string.  Long story short, rings got caught in exhaust ports and broke themselves and the land between the ring grooves.

Anyone have a standard size piston with 5/64" ring grooves they would like to sell?
I find myself badly in need of one.
Thanks.

Does anyone have a standard size piston laying around they would like to sell?
I'm in need of one with the 5/64" ring grooves.
Thanks.

Yep.  I think that's the way I'm gonna go.

I guess on the bright side I have an old piston to practice on.   :)

And thanks for all the measurements.  They're going to save me a lot of trial and error.

Engine & Transmission / Fast rotating rings
« on: September 28, 2023, 12:04:56 PM »
I found that the compression was a bit low on my 1952 Simplex Model M engine.
I put in some new rings with the end gap at .009" and rotated opposite each other and 90 degrees to the intake and exhaust ports.
I then installed motor in frame and started it up.  It started fairly easily and idled for a bit.

Then there was a "clink" and the motor stopped.

Turning flywheel showed there to be little to no compression.  My first thought was a broken rod, but that proved to be untrue.

It turns out both rings had rotated around to the exhaust port and managed to catch the edge.  This broke both rings and knocked out a piece of the land between the ring grooves.
Fortunately, no damage to the cylinder wall.

Before I invest in a new piston and rings I want to figure out how to prevent this from occurring again.

Question is, did I do something wrong?  I'll confess to knowing very little about 2 cycle engines.

Thanks.

I'm struggling with a similar issue.

Which terminal are you calling the ground terminal?

Thanks.

Frame, Tank, Seat, Controls, Etc / Wires?
« on: August 15, 2023, 08:21:17 AM »
Below is the inside of my Wico magneto.  I inherited a lot of questionable wiring that I've guessed out, but one still has no home.  In the pic below you see two wires coming into the ignition system.  One attaches to the points which I'm thinking is the ground that hooks up to the ignition switch.  The other was coiled up under the bracket and attached to nothing (I don't know where the other end attaches either).
Can anyone help me out?
Thanks.
It's a 1952 Model M.

Sure can do unnecessary.
Thanks 😁

Are you making any headway on these parts?
I find myself in need of 770. I don’t know what it is or what it does. Thought I could make one if I had some dimensions.
I noticed Wayne Mahaffey has 763.
I have 762. It’s fairly involved piece, so I don’t know how to communicate about it. Perhaps if you asked questions perhaps I could answer them.

That's good to know.  It clears up a lot of the confusion I've been experiencing about decals.
Thanks.

Thanks.  That's most helpful.  As I'm taking this thing apart< I'm starting to make some interesting discoveries.  Seems as if this bike has been down on the clutch side. I finally noticed that the "crash" bar has been repaired near where it attaches to the steering head.  That would also explain the ugly repair to the clutch arm and a few other misaligned things, methinks.
Thanks, again.

One other question.  You mentioned that the clutch arm is an L model.  Folks wiser than me about these bikes tell me it's a 1952 M model.  Are clutch arms for these models interchangeable?

Engine & Transmission / Clutch Arm Length
« on: May 12, 2023, 10:03:14 AM »
As shown in the pics, someone has bolted/welded an extension on the end of my clutch arm.  I don't know why anyone would do that, but before I start sawing off chunks, can anyone tell me what the correct length of this piece should be?
Thanks.
