Wheels & Tires / Re: Bolt in replacement wheels?
« on: January 09, 2017, 03:52:45 PM »
I'm ashamed it took this long but I seem to have zero spare time to do these things. I don't see how you guys do it.

Anyway... Here is a picture of a Worksman wheel with a simplex axle in it. Also, it's got sealed bearings that fit.  The only thing I have left to do it drill out the hole in the drum brake assy to accept the larger axle and get a few 7/16-26 BSC jam nuts to hold it all together. Effectively, it's a "bolt in" replacement wheel. I've got the rear axle as well and I need to do the rear wheel. I need to make sure everything "centers" when mounted but it looks OK with my eyeball.

Frame, Tank, Seat, Controls, Etc / Re: Frame bend radius
« on: November 28, 2016, 06:21:33 PM »
Thanks Tom... I figured it was a 3.5" but didn't know for sure.

I'm getting ready to work on mine over the winter. Life gets in the way of my hobbies.

Frame, Tank, Seat, Controls, Etc / Frame bend radius
« on: October 13, 2016, 10:32:22 AM »
Does anyone know what the bend radius is on the simplex frames? I have a buddy that bought a frame and wants to do something with it. The problem is the bend below the motor is halfway rusted through. I was planning on sectioning that piece out and welding in an new piece. It sure would help if I knew what radius shoe was needed to make that bend.

Any ideas?

Wheels & Tires / Re: tyres

I live local to Nola tire and have stopped in on occasion and spoken with the owner.

That tire was originally designed to run on a simplex. It just so happens to also fit on the local Pedicabs in New Orleans. He knew the tire sizes were the same and he knew he would have a local market to support his efforts so he made the tire.

So based on what the owner at Nola Tires said, it's a modern tire made for the simplex. The pedicabs running it are getting 500% more life out of it than any other tire they have tried. I think you'll be happy.

Frame, Tank, Seat, Controls, Etc / Re: New Crash Bars
« on: August 23, 2016, 02:02:05 PM »

I used to bend conduit and tubing and know my way around a bender. I know a guy that has a bender but thought it might easier to buy them. I need to get my hands dirty so I'll just order the tubing and see about bending some.

Frame, Tank, Seat, Controls, Etc / New Crash Bars
« on: August 23, 2016, 08:11:33 AM »
I purchased a simplex a few months ago. The crash bars were "gently used" and are bent. I don't want to restore a bike with a bent frame component.
It's not looking like they can be bent back into shape sufficiently to look unbent.

I could probably go through the trouble of finding the tubing and a sufficient bender to bend some more. Before I do that, does anyone sell something like that? I'd rather just cut the bent one off and weld on a new one.

Eric,

Send me a message with all of your pertinent information such as full name and address and so on. Make sure you let me know exactly what the letter has to accomplish.

Once I have that I'll put something in the mail for you that will pass muster.

Jason

Apparently our "Historical Society" has been in operation since 1976.

Anyone have a good digital copy of the Simplex Logo?

Surely someone from the "Simplex Historical Society" could validate this for this fine gentleman. I'm sure it could be printed on "official" letterhead.

I can even get it postmarked from the same zip code as the original factory location.

If someone is willing to get the dimensions on the parts, I would be willing to draw a 3d model of it and upload it here. If we do that the part could be had by anyone that has access to a machine shop with CNC capabilities.

It might be a solution to getting hard to find stuff. The world is changing as far as manufacturing goes and it might be good for the hobby to start doing this. It probably won't be cheap but it won't be impossible to source stuff either.

For example...

I don't think it's a perfect copy of the one from a simplex but probably pretty close. Also, I can generate shop quality drawings for stuff pretty easy too.

Frame, Tank, Seat, Controls, Etc / Re: Tubing thickness?
« on: May 26, 2016, 04:46:51 PM »
RickS, it looks like you are right .083 is pretty common. I looked around online and didn't see it immediately so I jumped to a conclusion about availability.  I popped the plugs off of the end of the frames on the rear dropouts and measured there. It's very possible that the several layers of paint and slight bit of grime added a few thousandths to the measurement. I didn't sand it prior to measuring.

I've bent plenty of conduit and tubing in my days but I think this is going to be a different animal. I was at work thinking I'll just measure the distance between the bottom "legs" where they are the closest and from there I can figure out the angle that I have to turn my crash bars when I bend the bottom 90's so they fall out right.  I didn't notice at first that the bottoms of the crash bars where they weld below the foot pads are two different lengths and appear to be at two different "elevations".

This is going to be a bit challenging to get right the first time. I have a buddy that has a mandrel bender he said I could use. Hopefully I get it right the first time.

Thanks. I was going to use a few sticks of conduit to make sure I have all my bends right before I bend the real thing for that reason.

I'll find some .090 since it's pretty close to what's already there.

Anyone know the thickness of tubing used for the frames? I measured .080 but that seems to be an oddball size.

whoever had the simplex before I bought it used the crash bars at least once and it shows. I'm going to cut off the bent bars and install some new bars.

Thanks for the offer but, I think I'm going to hang on to the air cleaner. The simplex I bought is really in good shape and although it has some mix and match parts it's really pretty complete. I think I'm going to try and go back as original as I can.  That other frame that I have needs everything so I might try 3d printing some of the parts out. They can be printed in carbon fiber so they'll be strong enough and with a coat of paint will probably pass muster.
