Buy, Sell, Trade / Simplex in Spain on ebay
« on: January 26, 2014, 07:15:50 PM »
Anyone notice that the bike that's on ebay (in Spain) has mid-fifties features, but has an early style fork/handlebar set up.  I wonder if they were made a little different for special export orders, or if somebody just swapped early parts onto it.  I sent the guy a note, asking for the serial numbers.

Buy, Sell, Trade / Simplex (?) trailer on ebay
« on: December 23, 2013, 04:25:30 PM »
My personal opinion is that this is not a simplex built trailer (can someone with an early bike tell us if the metal bracket on the fender is familiar (that goes under the lens)).  There were several manufacturers of these types of trailers in the 30's & 40's.

What do you guys think?

Buy, Sell, Trade / 1948 Servicycle for Sale
« on: December 22, 2013, 03:55:53 PM »
I got a note from a fella out east with a bike for sale.  It appears to be a deluxe.  His note reads:

I live in Gordonsville Va. and have this for sale. Will entertain $2,800 and
or  GOOD offers.  I took this simplex off the side of a mountain in the
community of  Colleen in Nelson Co. Virginia. It was in a rundown out
building up a rutted mud road. The guy I bought it from said he got it in
West Virginia when an old man died and his son sold it. And yes, it was in a
barn when he got it. It seems to be all there except for a shield and the
kicker gear. The engine is free and has good compression.

There were a couple other pictures if interested.  Contact Carlton at cwlohr@hotmail.com

Buy, Sell, Trade / Nice Servi-Cycle on Ebay
« on: December 16, 2013, 05:05:38 PM »
There's a pretty nice bike on ebay right now with not much time left.  It has a few issues but for the price, it's a pretty good deal at the moment.  I like the way they used a kitchen pot for a replacement magneto cover.

It looks like a '57 or later to me (but it's advertised as a '52).

"Rusty tank on my '82. Dropped a handful of drywall screws into the tank and tumbled it in the dryer (wrapped in pillows) for 2 hours - all I got was dirty drywall screws. 24 hours with 50/50 Milk Stone Remover and water left it nice and clean inside. Rinsed it with WD40 now it's waiting for spring."

Engine & Transmission / Reproduction Carburator
« on: August 26, 2013, 09:41:09 PM »
Just got the new repop carb from Carpenters today.  I figure I'll give it a try.  The 3rd small box it came in said made in china....guess I shouldn't be surprised.....

Now if I can just find those small odd 7/16 wrenches to get at that back side nut to get the old carb off......there's no way I'm pulling that magneto in order to get at it.....

Other Things Simplex / Car Show Yesterday
« on: August 18, 2013, 08:02:55 PM »
Took the Simplex and Sonya's Passport to her hometown yesterday to a car show.  8 other bikes there.....a customized Ninja & some stock harley's and one victory Vision.  We were a shoe in for the plaque.  The bike ran perfect all day (don't ask how it ran today.....).  Later we went to a benefit dinner & auction for a friend who has a 3yr old with Cerebral palzey.  They had a big poker run also & when all the bikers showed up they all got a big charge out of the Simplex.

Met a guy who had a '40 model as a boy & he delivered the Grit magazine with it (had a large basket mounted on the front).  He said he had a lot of fun on it.

Also met a guy who has a Sportman Senior motorbike in decent condition.  I told him about our website & I gave him an old copy of the VMBC magazine.  He lives near my home town and has invited us to come see his bike and his car....a 1922 Citroen.

Engine & Transmission / Phelon lighting Coils Output
« on: August 14, 2013, 07:16:37 PM »
Ok, everything looks normal on the coils, but it was a no go on any lights tonight when I got the bike running good.  I read in another thread that the output of a Wico light coil was somewhere between 2 & 8 volts.  Anybody measured a Phelon ?  I would expect about the same in volts, but I wonder how much power they have.

I ran an extra ground wire thru the frame & it's connected to the tail light housing, headlight housing, ignition switch housing, and magneto plate (the powder coating on the parts made me concerned about getting a good ground on everything.

The ignition switch itself checks out ok (the first one I got from Wayne was no good) too.

Wheels & Tires / Public Service Anouncement
« on: August 14, 2013, 06:53:44 PM »
Tonight while riding the bike around the property, I decided to take it up the road to check top end speed (somewhat....they just oiled & chipped our road).  When it came time to turn around, I noticed I didn't have any brakes!!! Fortunately there was plenty of room & I just turned the key off & rolled to a stop.

I didn't have the 2 nuts on the rear brake arm tight, as I was trying to "break in" those new brake shoe linings I had installed & knew that they would have to be adjusted.  Well, the vibration of the bike backed off the rear nut to almost the end of the rod, meaning the brake pedal had nothing to pull on.

So the moral of the story is to be sure and snug up the nuts on your pull rod to ensure you always have brakes (some of you have the brake rods with a clevis on both ends, so maybe it's not too bad for you).

Frame, Tank, Seat, Controls, Etc / Simplex Speedometers
« on: August 11, 2013, 09:41:06 PM »
While taking the Simplex on it's first voyage in 20 years.  The speedometer was squealing and jumping around (the needle that is).  That's a classic sign of dried out lubricant on the drive bushing.  By the looks of it, the unit has been apart before, or someone tried to take it apart.  I've been hesitant to mess with it until I had a plan together.  I unscrewed the drive cable while I was cruising down the road before it froze up (have had this happen in Studebakers in the past & just as they are trying to freeze up, they will snap off the small drive pin that the needle attaches to).

Anyone have any luck tinkering with these?  I'm sure it was made by some speedo company who sold them to anyone & would put any brand name on them.  Or, is there any services out there with good reputations on repairing them?

Engine & Transmission / Carburator Linkage
« on: August 11, 2013, 07:32:05 AM »
Ok, I screwed the pooch while trying to adjust the throttle linkage (it wasn't returning to idle when I closed the grip), it twisted off the little screw that goes into the bushing that the cable slides thru.  How much of a pain in the *ss is it going to be to get that thing drilled or cut out without screwing the whole thing up?  I still need to do more adjusting.  Otherwise I'm going to have to figure out where to anchor a return spring.  (BTW, it's the MT57 late model carb).

On another note, has anyone used one of those 99 dollar reproduction carbs that Carpenter's sell?  If so, how did it work out?

Engine & Transmission / Exhaust Pipe Spacing
« on: July 28, 2013, 11:52:18 AM »
I have a question for you guys with dual exhausts.  What is the center to center spacing between the ends of the pipes (at the back)?  I noticed that I have a close clearance between the right side rear bracket and the brake rod.  I had the brackets mounted on the inside of the rear drop out plates, but I think they need to be on the outside.  I either have to spread the pipes or bend the brackets.

My bike originally had the stubby muffler, so this dual set up I have (purchased from Wollards's son) will have to be tweaked a little to make it a good fit.  I had it on temporarily when I first tried to start the bike (a few coughs so far, but I was only spoon feeding fuel to it.

I'd like to get a few reports to see how much these things probably varied.

We're supposed to leave today for Topeka Kansas for the lamp convention too.....we'll see what happens....

Arghh......I finally decided to start finishing the Simplex.......after getting Sonya's Honda Passport & the Suzuki GT185 running.....nothing like waiting till the last minute.....

First problem was that the brake light switch I just got from Wayne is the wrong one.....I needed the one that faces forward (normally "open"), but he sent me the one that is designed to face backwards (normally "closed").  I can make ups some wires to get by for now I guess.

The bigger issue is the ignition switch I got from him.  There are 3 "clicks" from the off position.  The first click is supposed to allow ground for the ignition points.  Click 2 is supposed to be ignition and low beam head light.  Third click is supposed to be ignition and Hi beam headlight (both filaments).  On my switch the first click gives ignition, but click 2 has Lo beam, but no ignition, and click 3 is completely open.

I also ran an extra wire from front to back to provide a secure ground (connecting ground of switch, headlight, and tail light to the motor).

I guess I'll call him tomorrow & have him bring some parts to Portland for me.....
