Other Things Simplex / Car Show Today
« on: May 25, 2013, 06:40:43 PM »
Was supposed to be a really nice day, so we took the Simplex and the Victory to a local car show.  As expected no body had ever seen a Simplex before & only a handful knew that Victory was a brand of motorcycle.  We were 2 of only 4 bikes that came.  I put the Simplex between the Victory and a Boss Hogg.....one of the 502 cu.in. ones (big block chevy).  The simplex looked like a toy next to it.

I'm now batting 100%.....every time I ride, I get rained on.....it clouded up & started to rain just as I was leaving the show (Sonya had the Simplex in the back of the truck).  This makes 4 days in a row......

Other Things Simplex / Little Hershey Swap Meet
« on: May 16, 2013, 07:15:51 PM »
Will be headed to Rockford, IL this weekend to buy some model T parts from a poor guy who has to liquidate his business that his dad started because a greedy sister wants her share after dad past away recently.  They had been business for over 40 years & had 3 employees.

From there we'll go next door to Belvedere, IL to the Little Hershey swap meet/car show.  I'll keep my eye open for anything useful for scooters.

Other Things Simplex / VMBC website
« on: April 01, 2013, 08:51:20 PM »
I'll invite you all to join up on the vintage motor bike club website so we can help kick start the poor thing.  So far, Rick & I seem to be the bulk of their traffic.  If we can help promote them, they can help promote us!

Their website isn't nearly as nice as ours (thanks again Rick!), but if enough of us join in, it will motivate them to improve.

Other Things Simplex / Spring VMBC Magazine
« on: March 21, 2013, 07:17:35 PM »
Finally got around to looking at the latest magazine of the Vintage Motorbike Club.  A fella in Texas has a restored "57" Simplex for sale.  Asking $4250.

Also has a '66 Senior w/ Villars motor, also restored.  Asking $4500.  Both come with spare parts.

Jack Sides, Dallas Tx, 214-549-8333

Hey Rick, what did you think of that Safety Cycle the guy built from scratch?  Kinda like your truck project.

Simplexes with Non-Original Engines / Harbor Freight Motors
« on: March 11, 2013, 05:23:24 PM »
I was at a Harbor Freight store yesterday & they were having a tent sale.  They had one of the 6hp motors left on a table (still in the box) & I asked the kid if he could deal any on it.  It had been marked at $99.  The kid said, "well, it's gotta go today, so how does 50 bucks sound?"  I said "sold".

If I don't come up with a project for it by Portland, maybe I'll just bring it along.

Buy, Sell, Trade / Another Wollard item on ebay
« on: February 10, 2013, 05:50:11 PM »
I see that frame 10395 has now shown up on ebay.  It had a crankcase attached to it at the Wollard auction, but the seller must have removed it.  He doesn't seem to have it listed yet.

Frame, Tank, Seat, Controls, Etc / Front Fork Spring Retaining Nuts
« on: February 03, 2013, 07:51:52 PM »
I'd like to get an idea of when Simplex started using a retaining nut on the top of the "Spring Fork" (part No. 318).  All of the parts manuals we have on the website so far only show p/n 318 which does not have threads for a nut.

If any of you who bought some Wollard literature which shows another part number for the spring fork, please let me know.

Other wise, if those of you who have bikes "with nuts" would let me know (along with your serial number if I dont already have it), I'll see if we can tabulate it into a time line.
thanks,

Brochures and other Literature / The Real Summer '92 Simplex Article
« on: September 11, 2012, 10:29:06 AM »
I mis-identified the last article as the Summer issue.  In fact, it was the Spring '92 issue.  Sorry for the confusion.  Here is the last one I have, from the Summer issue.  It contains many details about the late model bikes (does anyone have a round glass tail light?  All I've seen are the plastic ones....)

Here's another Simplex article from Mr. Hilliker & Mr. Knapp from the VMBC magazine.  I had to pull a few pages with photos to keep the file size down (they would not reproduce very well anyway).

Here's part one of a series of articles written for the Vintage Motor Bike Club magazine.  Sorry the pictures didn't turn out well, but it's a scan of a copy of a copy I got from one of the Simplex "old timers" at Portland this year.

Photo Gallery / My Simplex Update
« on: August 14, 2012, 07:42:49 PM »
Since I had to take some new pic's of my bike for the state title application, thought I'd share them with you all.  I've not touched the bike since the Portland meet, although I plan to pull the motor & wheels here shortly to pin the piston & add the pinstripe to the rims.

Wheels & Tires / Wheel Pin Stripe
« on: August 10, 2012, 10:58:02 AM »
I forgot to take some close up pictures of some wheels while I was at Portland this year.....how far around the bend is the pin strip located on the wheel rims (or, how far from the center line are the stripes located)?  I'm going to try to get serious about getting the pin strip put on the wheels.
thanks,

Engine & Transmission / Engine -- Piston & rings
« on: July 15, 2012, 01:44:09 PM »
While at the Portland meet, I spent some time talking to Bob Kerr, who has 20 plus years experience with the Simplex motor.  One of the things he told me about was a weakness in the model M engines in that the rings are not pinned (to prevent them from rotating around the piston).  The aluminum cylinders have larger ports and if the ring ends rotate around where they can get caught in one of the ports, it will damage the ring and create a groove in the cylinder wall.  He recommended modifying the pistons by drilling small holes in the grooves and adding short small pins, then grinding notches in the rings to clear the pins.  (a lot of modern 2 stroke engines are made this way).

Since I've not had my motor apart, I don't know what it's true condition is (although it has great compression).  This week I plan to pull the jug off and check things out, and make this modification to the piston.  I'll try to capture the project with some pic's & will post them.

I was curious if any of the rest of you have this modification on your machines?
