Interesting, I didn't know they used zinc in any of the crankcases.  It would also be interesting to know if there are any motors out there that do not have a "B" suffix behind an "M" case.

Yes, I've also thought about the service engines helping to screw up the numbering system.  You know that some new motors and some rebuilts maybe, were grabbed from the stockpile & sent out to the field with no regard to sequence.  And, motors used for scooters would mess up servi-cycle sequencing.  I sure wish I knew what happened to all the records from the company when they went out of business (I guess I already know the answer to that question......file 13 probably).  Thankfully, Studebaker didn't throw anything away.  They have records that go all the way back to the 1850's.  The studebaker brothers used to clip & save every newspaper article printed about them.
