Hello and Merry Christmas to all. I haven’t been on the forum in a while.

Simplexguy, thanks for posting the pictures of you G-A-1. Nice detailed pictures of the footboards and how they attach to the frame. I’ve never seen any pictures of how they were done until now. Looks like re-doing my footboards will be my winter project.

Mike Sal, I’m the guy who would bring my Simplex to the WW2 Rockford event. I couldn’t get away from work this year so wasn’t able to make it.

Hi Michel,

I have been searching for information on the Airborne Simplex model G-A-1 for a number of years now, specifically what airborne companies or platoons they were issued to. I haven't been able to find much so far. I would appreciate any info that you could share.

I like your profile picture, There are just a couple of pictures of Simplex’s in use during the war and I haven’t seen that one before. Any possibility you could post a larger picture?

Thanks, Mike.

Mike, what unit are you with? I'll be at Lowell next month too. I'm with the 504th PIR, 82nd Airborne (the other airborne division).

Here’s another picture, this one was posted on the old Simplex web site. It’s labeled as a 1943 and is the civilian model. Looks like the air cleaner on the pictures I posted above.

I guess the question I have is when did Simplex start putting air cleaners on their bikes? In looking at the early Simplex ad’s and the few pictures I have it appears that they did not have them. When the Simplex was submitted for testing to the military in early 1942(?) I would think that if they didn’t have one then the Army would have required one. The only military reference to air cleaners I have been able to find was in regard to Harleys and Indians, that they were to have a large oil bath air cleaner for operations in dusty conditions.

I wonder if because of this military requirement, Simplex started making air cleaners either standard equipment or an option on the civilian bikes starting in late ‘42 or early ‘43. I also wonder if some early Simplex’s were retro-fitted later in the life with one.

Here's two pictures. The first is drawing of the 1942-43 military Model G, the second is a picture of a Model H. The air cleaners both look pretty similar and would assume what was used on the early 40-41 Model G.

Good eye Mike that you knew that my car was a Shay. The 1905 REO covered in the May 2011 HCR Newsletter is a really beautiful car. Makes me want to make more room in the barn for another project.

Where in Southern IL are you at?

Hello Mike,

I’ve run across the horselesscarriagereplicas.com web site in the past, pretty neat stuff. There’s a link on there for plans for a “visible gas pump” that I ordered. I’ve been contemplating building one for a while for outside my garage/barn. Here’s my other project.

Welcome to the forum. I agree with Rick, gas tanks for the Simplex are available but aren’t cheap.

I got a repop headlight from Dennis Carpenter Cushman reproductions. Cushman used the same model headlight as the Simplex. They also have a web site with an on-line catalog.

For a tail light I used a repop 1930 Ford Model A tail light from Snyder’s but they are also available from Mac’s, Brattons, Speedway Motor’s, etc… I had to tweak the bracket just a bit and the tail light bolted right on.

If you have any pictures of your GA1, could you post them? I would love to see it.

Thanks, Mike

Hi Rick,

Thanks for posting some great pictures! You didn't by chance take some pictures of the drive train setup on the non-stock models did you? Just curious on how they did it.

Thanks Rick, I think I spent more time on the design and building of the brake pedal and rod getting them functional than any other component on my bike.

Question for you Rick. When you laced up your rims, did you true them up yourself or did you take them in and have someone do it for you?

I haven't got around to figuring out how to power up the lights yet. That's a project for this winter. I don't think theres enough juice in my 3 HP to run the light(s) but I don't know for sure. I've seen some battery/LED lighting kits for bicycles on eBay that I'm considering.

Any thoughts from anyone?
