James, can you tell me a little more about the engine you have for sale?  Is the carburetor original to the engine?  Why the external coil?  Why is only one spark plug used and the other capped off?  Has the engine been rebuilt?

Thanks,
Bob

Engine & Transmission / Re: Engine RPM Range
« on: December 30, 2014, 09:03:32 AM »
For those interested, I read a Simplex advertisement relating to the Simplex Automatic which lists its design improvements and specifications.  It states that the 125cc engine has a 6:1 compression ration and developes 4 hp at 4000 rpms.

Does anyone know what the normal rpm operating range of a stock Simplex model M 125cc engine is?

Engine & Transmission / Re: Tillotson Carb Adjustment

The carburetor on my 56 model Simpkex is a repo, but I doubt that it has been modified. I plan to still take your recommendation for adjusting the carb.

Thanks for your input Rick. I think I remember reading in an earlier post that the main nozzles and idle tubes vary slightly from the original Tillotson carb and the Repo carb. That being the size and number of holes from one to the other.  You say that the needle valve adjusting screw should be opened closer to two turns rather than one turn on a repo carb.  Is that taking into account modifying the nozzle and idle tube on the repo carb to match the original carb, or rather without modifying them and leaving them as supplied?

Engine & Transmission / Tillotson Carb Adjustment
« on: December 19, 2014, 02:25:02 PM »
While similar, the procedure for adjusting a Tillotson carburetor varies slightly from the Simplex Automatic Owner's Manual of Operation and Maintenance to the Tillotson Manufacturing Company, Original Carburetor Equipment List Manual. The main difference is the sequence for adjusting the Idle Speed Screw and High Speed Mixture Screw, and the throttle position during adjustment of the high speed screw.  Which procedure do the majority of you owners follow?

After seeing you put many miles on it at Portland, I am wondering, did you have to do any work on the motor to get it to run so well?  It appeared to start and run as good as the day it was originally sold.

I would prefer that the frame number, rather than the engine number, be listed on the title when possible.  My thought being if the bike was stolen and an aftermarket engine (or a  replacement Simplex engine) later installed, I would have no way of proving ownership.  West Virginia does have a form that must be signed by a law enforcement officer verifying the VIN number when applying for a title from a bill of sale.  I plan to have this done and keep it with the title that lists the engine number.

I live in West Virginia where I titled a 1956 model from a Illinois bill of sale. I had the frame number listed on the title. I also purchased a 1957 model that was titled in Michigan and it lists the engine number.  I was told that bikes are titled that way in Michigan.  I tried to have the frame number listed rather than the engine number when I applied for a new title but West Virginia would not do that. So I have bikes titled both ways

Mike I am glad there are guys like you out there that are willing to take on these projects and breathe new life into them.  I am simply amazed at the magic you perform when looking at the finished product.

Just arrived home from my first trip to Portland and am already looking forward to next year's event. I enjoyed meeting so many guys who share a mutual interest in Simplex motorcycles, and now being able to put a face to the names of those I have followed on this website. Winning two trophies with the bike Mike restored was gratifying, however it isn't meant for a single individual. I consider this a win for the entire "Simplex Owners Group".  The ice has been broken!
