Tap
« on: April 16, 2015, 03:42:17 PM »
Found a deal on this tap. Needed to chase out treads on upper bearing  race and nut. Have to be very careful not to cross thread but worked beautifully.  Living and breathing Simplex all I can until the show!

I think your refering to the steering neck ?  I wonder if it would be less chance to cross thread by using starting the thread chasing at the top end rather than the starting on the taper end . That is quite a fine thread .

It is for the neck.  And I bet you are correct. I think I am going to use it to make my own die with as the dies I have found are out of this world in price for what it is. The nut still goes on hard.  The threads look good so I think they must be egg shaped a bit.

For future reference, what is the thread size?

Turns out I had to chase both parts but a die for this size was like $100 so I made my own thread chaser by using the tap I bought.  And then it screwed on so nice! The threads on the steering tube weren't bad but about .007 or .008 thousandths out of round but the chaser fixed it up. It is a wonder it wasn't worse as I had to heat the nut to get it off. I used 4140 preheat treat steel so it is hardened but not so much I couldn't machine it.
