Extended Kickstand
« on: March 10, 2013, 11:39:49 AM »
As anyone who owns a Servi-Cycle knows, when you have it resting on it's kickstand, the bikes lean way over. How many times have you seen them resting with a piece of 2x4 laying under the kickstand. Well, the one from my 55 was completely worn out on the bottom, probably from dragging it on the ground for too many years. So I decided to do something about it. I had another laying around, so I cut it in half and added a 1 3/4" piece from the trashed one, sleeved it with 1/2" tube, which is a perfect fit, and welded it back together.  I was going to leave it like that, but then said, what the heck, I will just chuck it up in my lathe and turn it smooth.

I also built up some weld on the bottom as the tube was worn a little thin.

Here it is. This should keep the bike much more upright.

Rick ,

That turned out nice . No pun intended . ;)

How much more upright does that extension make your bike stand ?

On my bike , the mount is nearly flat . I would think that the factory would have put a bit of an angle on the out position , but ???

Don't know yet Pete, as the bike is in pieces. I will post an update when I put it together.  I went 1 3/4" extra because a 2x4 is 1 1/2" thick, and with the kickstand angle, I figure this should be close to the same.

So , your kick stand has an angle and doesn't just stick straight out ?

Mine is almost as flat as the foot plate . That's why I put a bend in my new stand .

Pete, I just checked my 49,53, and 55 and all the kickstand plates are mounted at an angle to the floorboard. I would estimate about 20 degrees off the plane of the floorboard.

Pete, has that mount been rewelded or is that the factory weld? That weld looks new in the picture.

I really don't know , Rick . It's been that way since I've owned it . It's possible that a PO had it re-welded .

Pete, how far is it from the mount plate to the floorboard?  On my 55 it measures 3/8", at the closest; it is hard to tell from your photo, but it looks like a lot more.

Also measured the '49 1/4"  and the '53   5/8".  It appears that these were not welded all that consistently!

Rick ,

My plate measures 7/8" from the closest point to the floor board .

I wonder if a BFH could change that to a better angle .

I bet it could.  I think that would make a big difference in the way the bike sits on the kickstand.

I just happen to have a 3 pounder . I'll have to study the plate to see if an adjustment would help . ;)
