Crankshaft Needed!!!
« on: June 17, 2014, 08:21:00 AM »
I know this is a shot in the dark, but I need a crankshaft for an INTERNAL Kickstart Simplex Sportsman.  If anyone has a lead, please let me know.  Thanks.

How do you tell the differences on cranks?

How do you tell the differences on cranks?

They look similar, but the drive pulley is keyed on vs screw on, and the kickstart gear is installed before the flywheel goes on.  You can see the difference here:

I spoke to Wayne today and he has a sportsman crank.  He will get it out to me and I should be back in business! He also said he will repair the one I have!  I'm not dead yet!

Wayne is the man!!
The bitterness of poor quality, lingers long after the sweetness of low cost!

Thanks for the info.  Looks like I have standard cranks and an older model one.  The older model has three separate keyed slots.

I agree. The bottom 2 are model M, the top earlier style.  The keyway on the bottom one doesn't look too good from the picture.

Here are the pictures of the crank.  You can see where a repair was attempted earlier, but the brazing did not hold.

Definitely repairable. I have seen where a guy will take a carbon  key and put it in place then weld around it  but this case looks to require a full weld job. First thing to do is remove all the brass.

Waiting on it still.  Wayne thought he had one that just needed the keyway fixed, but it turns out the shaft was bent.  He is making a new shaft for it, and I should have it by the end of the week.  I need it by tuesday, 7/15, if I am going to have in running for Portland.

If I get the crank, it will start within 3 kicks!  LOL
