clutch bracket

Hey yall I got another question. Does the automatic clutch bracket bolt to the outside or inside of the frame? Ive looked at several pics of bikes on here and some are to outside and some are to inside,and also should I put a flat washer between clutch bracket and frame?

Red, that is a good question.  I have mine both on the outside on my 53. On my 55, it had right out, left in.  Go figure?

As I look closer, the uprights are welded in different locations. On the 53, they have a slight kick in at the bottom, and are welded on the inside. On the 55, they are straight and welded in the middle of the lower tubes.

I guess it just depends which way it fits best. this bike is so close,just have exhaust and wiring left   Getting antsy

what about the spring,does it go over the top of the bar or under the bar on the frame?

My bracket only lines up right if the right side is inside the frame and the left is outside .

The spring is attached over the bracket and over the frame cross member .

I have a '57 Automatic .

If you look at some of the brochure pic's you can see that the automatic tranny hoop is offset to the left (right side is inbound & left side is outbound relative to the frame).

thanks yall! do you have a flat washer inbetween them to keep it from rubbing paint off?

the spring goes over the bar that the gas tank bracket rides on?

Here's few pics to help :





The only washers I have are shown below with the exception of one regualr flat washer on the right side of the transmission shaft to space the whole thing just enough so my pulley nuts will clear . It should be noted that I have the pulley bolts/nuts reversed from OEM . I did that just so I could keep a close eye on the nut position on the bolts . Easier to tell if they are loosening or not .

That's a thick washer between the frame and the bracket and a regular ( downsized ) washer on the outside of the bracket . The spacers that the bracket rides on are a bit longer than the bracket is thick , so rubbing is minimal .

got it now,thanks! there was a small hole on the opposite side of that crossbrace on frame and I had the spring going from the right side of the clutch bracket to the left side of that brace but I knew something wasnt right with that

OK, to throw a little more confusion into the game.  My 1953 Automatic is one of the earlier models.  Most automatics have a little stub that protrudes out from under the clutch bracket to hook the idler pulley spring to.  Look carefully at mine, and you will notice it doesn't have one, but has a tang on the clutch bracket itself to hook the idler spring on.  Sorry the picture of the finished bike isn't better.

thats how mine is Rick but my bracket didnt have the place to hook the spring so I drilled a 1/4 hole, put a nut on both sides of the frame brace on a 1/4 bolt and left just enough space to hook the spring
