1948 MOTOR QUESTION

Hello, I have a question about the belt guide behind the backing plate.  I have had some people say only use the two bolts for the backing plate. The third hole which is a smaller diameter (see picture), is the one in question. I want to put this back to original. was this bolt hole ever used?  and if it was used does the belt ride above or below it?  any pictures or help would be great.

Hopefully one of the guys with an early motor will chime in.  The M motors don't have that hole or even a belt guide.  Have you looked thru the manuals & such section to see if there's an illustration in any of the early manuals?

Finally took a look at my engine for you. My engine block isn't drilled at all at that location. Took some photos anyway.

Thanks for the pictures. on the last picture , what is the lower side of the belt riding on? it looks like some sort of bracket? I don't have that?

It is a small bracket that keeps the belt in in the groove of the crank pulley. It bolts on underneath the carburetor nuts.
The upper pin does the same thing by keep the belt 'hop' down.
