If that's a simplex part, it bolts to the side to the cylinder head & the strap that runs under the gas tank.  I'm not familiar with it, but I only know the late model parts.

As in like an upper Motor mount?

 Is that compression release stock on early models or did you install it?
My 56M has the hole in head (un-taped) as all I have seen have.
I think I still have one I never installed. If I can find it I will put it in mine.
The one I may have has the same threads as a spark plug.
Does it give you a little braking power as the old 2-strokes from the 60s did.
Anytime you have a 50-50 chance of getting something right,

Gramps, yes the compression release was only used on the earlier bikes (helped to start & stop the direct drive models & stop the motor in the 2nd generation models).  You M series doesn't need it as you have a "neutral" in the tranny.  I don't think you'd gain much benefit for the effort of adding one to the later motors.

The compression release is operated by the left handle grip and is twisted back such as a throttle is. I always enjoy the sound it makes when it dumps the compression. I suppose if you had to do a panic stop you could dump the compression while breaking and get stopped a little quicker if you couldn't get the clutch rocked back quick enough. And you are correct. The threads are the same as a spark plug.
