I am getting started on the frame for my chromed out simplex.    Sand blasted and ready to check it out.

Frame number is 10811.

This will be the tank I use.  Took it down from the rafters!  Incidentally, the tank and frame will be painted on this bike.  And I am thinking about painting the drum on the automatic clutch to match to give some contrast.

Not too much to do to this tank.  I will be using the factory chrome add-on sides to get that chrome on there!!

I really considered that PD.  But decided to go for some contrast.

At first look I thought my frame wasn't too bad.  Just a little bit bent on the left crash bar.  I straightened it some and took another look.  And didn't like it so got busy removing the lower section of that crash bar.  I know that Wayne has replacements but I thought it might be hard to match left to right.  Especially at the top where it is noticeable.  Plus, I already had the tubing anyways.

The replacement piece is in position, and I plan on doing the welding later this evening.

I have made a new clutch bail because the one I have is quite pitted and thought the chrome on a new one would turn out so much better.

I have matched the bends and will cut the ends accordingly.  However, I am unsure where to drill the holes.  Logic might tell me directly across from one another.  So, either the original is bent in such a way that it shortened one of the legs or the holes were never across from one another.   I put the original in the frame with a clutch and it looked fine.

I looked at Ricks excellent post of clutches.  My original seems to match his.

Just want some input.

Tom, the early ones were made straight, and the later ones were made with the offset like you have. I don't know why or when the change was made.

Appreciate it!  I will finish it up and then send my last pile of chrome work out.

I finished the replacement clutch bail and have everything ready to ship to the chrome platers.  Other photos are of what are already done.  I will have both styles clutch bails chromed.

Rectangular piece going along for the ride.  Window frame for an Eco-meter.

The welding repairs are completed.  I will need to finish a few small spots with filler now.

Not far off from paint now.

Tom, are you going to weld up the groove or just use fill it?

Planning on filling it.  Not quite as wide of a gap on the other side.  The lower joint is much smaller gap. Plus, I will use filler on a couple of small dents.

I have been working on small jobs for this bike while waiting on the chrome work to return.  I am not sure why but had to trim the length of my spokes to work with my Worksman wheels. Then rethread.  The front wheel is complete and I can put the tire on it now.  But still waiting for the rear hub to come back. I am also waiting on the seat pan. (and many other parts) I am planning on just doing the leather work myself. But, if not, there is a local leather shop in town to bail me out.  He did the seat on the Servi-glide.

I had already had the exhaust manifold chromed.  Then decided to run a dual exhaust that I have been saving. It was then that I noticed it goes over the manifold NOT inside.  I put some elongated holes in a 1/4" thick plate and bolted the manifold to it.  This allowed me to indicate it in, so it was perfectly vertical in both directions.  Then I found the center of the outlet, gave the mill a few dimensions as a circular profile.  This allowed me to interpolate the hole.  Depending on what side of the circle I put the cutter on dictates if it will mill the I.D. or the O.D.    By telling the mill the radius and the size of the cutter the CNC does the rest.
I set the outer diameter at 1.420".  It slips into the exhaust quite nicely!
