Pete, that is a good question.  I know the automatics take the 5L280.  Maybe the manual shift bikes take the 5L270?  Tom Klump, help us out on this one!!

At one point I can remember matching up a front belt as I was working at a parts store then(in the machine shop) but my belt were still a pretty nice original so I decided to still use.  Can't help you on the length.  I did replace the rear. I will have to check to see what size that one was.  I remember Gary saying something to me that they were 11/16 wide belts originally.

Yes it does.  5L280 is a BX25 belt.  28" outside diameter, 25" inside diameter.
The X in BX means cogged belt.

Here is a little more:

 B Section V Belts
Manufacturing Range: 22¨-660¨
¨B¨ section inside length plus 3¨ equals outside length up to 120
B220 and larger inside length plus 1.3¨ equals outside length.
(ie. B240=B241.3)
Top width -21/32¨. Depth- 13/32¨

I just went out and compared old belts to new ( the new BX belts match nicely ) and while doing that recalled that the outside measure was 3" longer than the inside measure and figured that that must be the difference . It didn't occur to me that one was cogged ( BX ) and the other ( 5L ) was not . I do recall reading about the differences , now that you reminded me . ;)

So , I apologize for my absentmindedness . :-[

Pete, I just read some info on belts.  B belts and 5L are the same size, but a B belt is made stronger, with a life expectancy 2.5 times that of a 5L belt.  For what we are doing, I don't think it matters all that much. The 5L belts are also cogged.

Hmm , learn something new every day .

I bought the BX series belts for the cogs as well as the longer life expectancy . I've had the 'standard' 5L belts on mowers and was not at all impressed with their lifespan . I much prefer the heavier duty belts that last 3 times as long in the same application . Granted our bikes are not extreme usage situations , but I still prefer the BX over the 5L for the confidence that I'll likely never have to replace them . Not to mention that the BX belts can be had for about the same price as the 5L belts . I paid $26 total for two belts ( BX25 & BX75 ) , at my door .

Here are the measurements from my original belts.  Belts have Dayton molded into them and maybe a run or mold number but cannot see a part number.  If there ever was one maybe it was printed on.  Primary belt looks to be settling down in the crank pulley a bit.  Measures .612wide X 26" long around the outside. The width measurement would explain why it sits deeper in the vee pulley This was taken with the rocker clutch tipped back to keep the belt taught so string would wrap around nicely.  Secondary belt measures .761 wide X 76.5" long around the outside.  Some wear but not bad. Kind of thinking about putting it back on to save originality.  Both belts are cog belts.

Gary had a bunch of 5L270 belts.  I bet these are correct for foot shift bikes.
