Did you ever get around to posting photos with the kickstarter attached to your bike’s motor? I’d love to see how much t looks and in action

Keep your fingers crossed for a reply , as we haven't seen 'carryall' on this site for about 5 years .

Welcome James . :)

Nice bike and seems to be complete . Good score .
How is the compression & spark ?
If it's been a few years since it ran , the carb might need cleaning .

1. My Simplex has two fill caps and I’ve been trying to drain the tank. I’ve leaned the bike over but still seem to not be able to drain the left side of the tank.
2. What fuel is everyone running? 50:1 25:1 or the bottles of the 2 stoke premix from the hardware stores.

The lower left side is the reserve . Run out of the right side gas , just lean the bike on it's right side and motor to a station or home . ;)

And , I run a 40>1 mix of Lucas .

Welcome Theduke 23 . :)

Your bike looks to be fairly complete and in decent shape .
Seems to be a 1956 M .
Please post the frame and engine numbers for the registry .
Motor number is located bottom left side .

and that is why I always encouraged everyone to use the website picture posting, as they should last as long as I keep paying for the website!

Thank You for that^ , Rick .

I Know I don't use the feature as much as I should .
I'll use it more on my hopefully not too distant future tear down . ;)

FYI

On May 15, Imgur will be deleting all photos/videos that were uploaded by anyone who wasn't a logged-in user.

As Imgur never required people to log in/register to host content, it's likely that any of our members who used that site at any point in the last decade will fall foul of this decision. Any threads containing pictures/videos hosted on Imgur will, on May 15, become broken links just like they did after Photobucket pulled the plug.

That keyway looks terrible. I would weld it up and remachine it.

I did weld it and I hand filed it back to size .
Holds the key nicely . ;)

Pete, did they shear when running or trying to start it? How sloppy was your keyway? How bad was the flywheel to crank fit. I think all mine would run without a key at all!

Rick ,
All would shear very soon after starting . It would run for only a few RPMs and done .
The keyway was much like ramwing7s' :

And , the taper fit wasn't near as pitted as in that^ pic . It seemed fairly good , but I did notice a bit of surface rust on the crank taper after it had sat for a few months , flywheel mounted and untouched . So , I knew that the taper needed some lapping to be better .

I don’t have a spec either, but I’ve never seen a broken key on a Simplex. What I have seen many times is a cracked keyway in the flywheel. A quick google search shows Cushman flywheel nuts get torqued to about 50-60 lb-ft.

I should have taken pics of the few sheared keys that I had happen . I will say that I haven't had it happen since I welded the keyway . But , that wasn't all that long ago .

I sure don't know the specific spec .
I always just make sure that nut is good and tight . Too loose and the flywheel can shear the woodruff key without much trouble . That , specially if the crankshaft taper and the flywheel tapers don't match well . It's why I recommend lapping the flywheel to the crankshaft . The better the tapers match , the better chance of the flywheel not spinning on the crankshaft .

Hmm , I see the keyway has been wallowed out on the left side . That should be repaired .
I had the same on my crankshaft . I welded the left side of the keyway and had to hand file it back to proper size . No more wobble of the key .

I also see the taper that the flywheel rests on is pretty pitted . How does the corresponding area of the flywheel look ?
In order for a better hold of the flywheel , you should consider lapping the flywheel to the crank tapper . That should smooth both surfaces , resulting in a much better fit . It's that fit that actually holds the flywheel from turning . The key is there to simplify timing .

As for your spring pushing the cam outward , try the tape I suggested .
