Title: Texas Newbie
Post by: Stafford on November 22, 2013, 12:59:08 PM
Just wanted to say HI from the new guy. I'm looking for a Simplex to restore.
Just missed one in Bryan Tx. made me sick. I'm in Burton Tx. and have other bikes that I ride.
Would love to have a Simplex to use as a get around town bike. Thanks for letting me in.
Cheers, Stafford

For the right bike, for the right price maybe 400 to 500 mls. Looking for something that is as complete as possible.
Would spend a little extra to have title in order so as to put it on the road. If anyone knows of something please let me know.
There is always the chance I might even go farther. Cheers

Hi neighbor,
Glad to see someone close to talk shop with. If you want the easy way to restore a bike and start with one complete. Well this one is not bad for a start. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1952-VINTAGE-AMERICAN-SIMPLEX-AUTOMATIC-CONFEDERATE-MOTORCYCLE-SERVI-CYCLE-Bike-/281168085998?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item4176ec83ee&vxp=mtr
Its not even that far away I'm thinking road trip.

Nope..but it looks to have a lot of other parts...maybe the engine is good too

I have looked at that one and think that I might find something better. after a tank, road trip and etc. I could have 3000 in it and not even started on the restoration. Thanks for the heads up and please let me know of others that are out there.
If that one was less $ I could justify getting it. If not for repair for parts. I'm interested in all conditions from parts bikes to drivable  ones.   Cheers

I wouldn'tthink that high of a start cost maybe 2500 but thats not bad. There is a best offer button and its been on ebay a long time. Shoot offer a low of 1200 and see if you get a nibble. The engine and trans alone would cost that much if you are doing a regular rebuild. Also with a good co-pilot maybe a day there and back of driving.

Hi Oil-Lamp,......... think I'm still going to pass on this one. Noticed you are in Burton Tx. Too.
I live on McNelly Ln. off 390 and I'm the guy doing the archaeological dig at the RR station cistern.
Ever you get a chance stop by and say hi. Cheers

I would have to look closely at that ebay bike before I would even consider an offer.  There looks like so many things wrong  that it is very possible that the motor is a paper weight.  Look at the compression plate cover.  Who would do that?  What is hiding behind it?  I would pull that cover and look inside.  I have seen motors that had water in them that were all rotted out on the inside.  I have bought better for much less.

Looks like one to me. It is missing the pinion gear for the kickstart.

That must be a Wyco flywheel as the Phelon on my bike is more rounded .

And , I don't see a magneto plate behind that flywheel , but , maybe I'm blind .

That is a Wico.  You are correct, missing the backing plate.  I would give about $500-600 for that bike.

Well if it wasnt for the fact that i just jump into a new tractor i would be making some offers for it. There are many good parts there to get a good start.

Stafford, send me a private msg on the dig times I like trying to figure out what happend with items I find.

Sorry for the delay in getting back. I'll be out of pocket a few days but will get with you when I get back.
I really would like to see your bikes, I have a Street Glide and a Chopper but really love the old iron.
Still looking but going to be patient. I have been known for moving a little too quick and don't want a repeat.
Talk to you soon
Cheers

I'm another (Native) Texan. Being patient and just catching up on Debt (mainly trying to get the house free and clear) before I try to get a working Simplex. I'll likely just buy a finished or near-finished one if possible. At this point I'd rather ride than work on it. Too much time wrenching in the past on "projects". If you guys ever meet up I'd love to attend if possible.

Distance from Austin? Zero. Live about 1 mi. from 183/Loop 1.

Driver,
If you will shoot me an eMail I'll give you my phone number. ( eMail is on the profile )
If your around Burton I'd love to show off the Simplex and even offer you a chance to ride it.
Cheers

copied to this one too.

Well here's something for the Texas bunch if you got a few minutes this weekend. Its a antique motorcycle event in Smithville Tx. great little show to see some great bikes. I will not be able to go this year but went last year and wished I had more to show. Here's a link to the flyer I hope: http://www.cherokeeamca.org/images/events/smithville2014_final2_1374465108_5127.pdf
http://www.cherokeeamca.org/events.html

Also if you take a simplex you will hear tons of stories of people who had one back in the day.
