Rear brake shoes

Does anyone know prices and where I can get new brake shoes or my existing ones relined? Is there an equivalent from a different bike that will work? -Tony

Wayne has the linings.  They were 31 dollars a pair earlier this year when I bought mine (they come with the rivets).  If you look at the "brakes" article in the "wheels & tires" section that I posted, there are some pictures of how I replaced the linings on my brake shoes.  The replacements are the woven kind, not the solid "asbestos" type like were originally used.

At Portland, Jim Lokai showed me some brakes that he has done by someone that are bonded to the shoe.  His handle on here is  Jim L, so maybe send him a message and he could find help you.

Nice find Bill!  How do they stop, same as stock?  Do they take stock brake springs, or something different?

yes, use the springs, everything seems to work fine. besides, trying to stop a simplex from any speed is a real trip

For the record and because I didn't know about the shoes mentioned above , I relined my original brake shoes . The lining was bought from a local brake shop . If I recall , I paid $8.13 for the replacement linings and more than enough rivets .

Pete, can you post a picture of the brake shoes?  Maybe you could supply us with some if needed?

They are currently somewhere in a transport box . I'll see if I can dig them out and get a pic or two .

The 'local' shop was , at the time , local . We now live and travel in our motor home . Alabama bound as I write . I can try getting hold of that shop to see if the linings are still available .

The short story ...

I did these 4 or 5 years ago . I had forgotten that I opted to use pop rivets , instead of the brass rivets , to attach the linings .

Obviously , pop rivets made working the linings into place easier . Had these shoes been meant for any high speed application , considering the heat and much higher overall stress , I would have used the brass rivets . But , being as these shoes will likely never get hot enough to make a difference , let alone white knuckle stress ...
Anyway , the pop rivets are an experiment for me . I thought about a contact bonding agent also , but ...

I got the feeling that what I wanted wasn't the same thing as what they were saying they had .
I'll be back in Michigan by the 2nd of May . I'd planned on stopping at that shop to see first hand if they could supply the right linings .
