flywheel removal

 I have never taken one of these simplex engines apart and I don't want to do any damage. How do I safely remove the kickstart gear and the flywheel? I don't want to put a pipe wrench on the starter gear and damage it, is there a better way?

Vintage, here is the info from the 1948 manual.  I think the pinion gear size is the same for all years.

 ok removing the starter gear was easy, 1 1/4 12 point socket and zip gun made fast work of it,  pulling the flywheel itself was another issue but I did get it off by making a quick puller using the 3 threaded holes. Magneto is in good shape, missing the plug wires, I am assuming a plug wire to the back side of each of the two coils?

One of the coils is the ignition, the other is the lighting coil.

 okay that makes sense, however I have seen some simplex engines with 2 plug wires, are both plug wires attached to the larger coil? The small coil is for the lighting?

The ignition coil should have 2 outputs.  As far as I can find out, there is no coil currently being made that is a replacement for the dual output coil.  Wayne Mahaffey sells a coil with one output and he told me to just use the other wire as a dummy.  I think if you try to hook both wires together, they will ground each other out.
I have spoken to a guy in ma. that may have these coils available in the future, so lets hope.

It's been over a year . Have you since spoken to this gentleman from Ma about the dual output ignition coil availability ?

I destroyed my original and would like to have a working dual output coil , again .
