1948 Servicycle for Sale

I got a note from a fella out east with a bike for sale.  It appears to be a deluxe.  His note reads:

I live in Gordonsville Va. and have this for sale. Will entertain $2,800 and
or  GOOD offers.  I took this simplex off the side of a mountain in the
community of  Colleen in Nelson Co. Virginia. It was in a rundown out
building up a rutted mud road. The guy I bought it from said he got it in
West Virginia when an old man died and his son sold it. And yes, it was in a
barn when he got it. It seems to be all there except for a shield and the
kicker gear. The engine is free and has good compression.

Thanks Mike!  I would like the members to know I buy, sell, trade American Motorcycle's and parts around central Virginia. I love all things rusty as I was the son of a man who owned an auto parts junk yard. I get a thrill from the hunt as well as getting parts back to the people who need them to keep the old iron running. Of course, being unemployed at the time, I make a little money to keep me going. I would love to find a good home for this old gal, and that's why I joined this site. I just heard about a Simplex frame sitting in a field and will check that out in the near future and let you know. I would now like to reduce my price to $2,450 after chatting with Mike a bit. If you have a 1956 or 1958 Harley Hummer or 165, or a Mossberg Mariner they would be considered as trade. I would also be willing to meet anyone a couple of hours in your direction to help get her to a good home. I have a few more pics, so E-mail me for them and my phone number.

Well fellows...................Shaggy lost but the real owner won. It turns out the bike was stolen. I came out of my garage to greet a man who was coming to look at my simplex. I saw two Louisa Sherriff cars and a fella in a white truck. To make a long story short, Greg got has fathers Simplex back that he bought new when he was 17. I am not happy about losing the money I paid for the bike.............but I am happy it went back home.  It takes sorry SOB to steal a bike!

Any chance you can go back on the sob that sold you the bike?  I'd love to see the long arm of the law pay him a visit & give him a taste of what you went thru.

I can sympathize with you. In 1949 I bought a scooter from a dealer in California. The dealer closed down and opened a shop in Las Vegas Nevada With the same name “Scooterville”. Scooterville while in California  had the scooter on consignment. Eventually I had to return the scooter to its rightful owner and was also out of my cash payment.
